Our students have had a brilliant start to 2022, despite the COVID challenges children have settled in very well with learning units occurring across all grades. Our school values have been front and centre with many highlights of students setting challenging goals to work towards this year. We have been particularly impressed with our Year 5 and 6 students who have put their names forward for leadership opportunities including house captains and Student Voice Team.
COVID-19 update
Our community have been very supportive with this challenge, and I would like to thank everyone for their ongoing efforts to keep our school community safe. We have only had 3 positive cases across the school all in separate classrooms with no secondary cases recorded. A number of students are isolating at home due to being close contacts but are engaging in the Virtual Learning Centre until they return to the classroom. We encourage families to continue to collect RAT kits when required and test children if they are showing symptoms.
Values Hook Term 1
We have collectively had a calm and focused start to the year with clear and high expectations being set by teachers across our school. Underlying this is our responsibility to live our school values in how we conduct ourselves, make decisions and run our day-to-day business across the school. This holds true for all members of our school community – staff, students, parents, and carers.
Our initial hook is linked with Aspiration to start the school year: Best Foot Forward
Grounds/Facilities Update
Our playground in the Grace Crichton-Gill ELC is now completed. The children are loving the new space and challenges it is providing. We are continuing to develop the landscaping around the equipment which includes grass and plants.
Our basketball court repair is also now finalised after some flood damage during the holidays. Shortly we will complete the line marking however the fences are now removed and full court games have re commenced.
We have also recently purchased new furniture for classrooms to support flexible seating plans. The new furniture includes desks and tables at different heights to support students' varying styles of learning.
Your Go-To Guide to Rapid Antigen Tests
This guide has been developed to support families using rapid antigen tests (RATs).
How to access more RATs
All students now have two RATs as part of their COVID-19 care pack. As you use your supply of RATs, parents and carers must ask for more RATs at school by contacting the office. Each student has access to two RATs per week if requested.
It’s important to note that if you have run out of school issued RATs, and your child has symptoms, please don’t attend school to collect a RAT. Instead, we encourage you to reach out to the Tasmanian Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738 to obtain a RAT. Thank you for your cooperation on this.
How to use a RAT
Your child only needs to use a RAT if they have COVID-19 symptoms. If your child has COVID-19 symptoms, they must stay at home and use a RAT.
Please refer to Public Health’s easy-to-follow instructions on how to use a RAT. In the information pamphlet contained in your rapid antigen test, under section 6.0 there is an instruction stating ‘you must take a laboratory PCR test immediately’ if your RAT tests positive. Public Health assures us that school staff and students do not need to do a PCR test if their RAT tests positive.
What to do with your test result
If a negative result is returned, and your child is feeling well, they can attend school.
If your child tests COVID-19 positive, you must immediately let us know, and complete the Public Health form. You must follow Public Health advice. During your child’s isolation period, if they feel well they can access learning via the Virtual Learning Centre.
If someone in your household tests COVID-19 positive, you must immediately let us know that your child is a close contact and follow Public Health instructions. Your child can access learning via the Virtual Learning Centre during this time.
If you have any questions, please contact the school office. For more information, please visit the Tasmanian Government Coronavirus website or contact the Tasmanian Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738, or Department of Education COVID Support Hotline at COVID19support@education.tas.gov.au or on 1800 816 057.

We have had a fantastic start to the year in 2 Gallen. We have been putting our best foot forward and learning to be independent in classroom tasks and activities like silent reading, packing up, organising our things and ourselves.
Some highlights of the year so far have been making things from boxes in free play, making new friends, playing math games outside, learning to meditate and creating things with loose parts. This is our first time participating in the STEM program and we are really excited to be working with Mr Stewart on that this year.
We have had a wonderful and calm start to the year in 3 / 4 Shearing. We have spent the last two weeks implementing our classroom practices and expectations. We have hit the ground running with focusing on developing our skills in predicting using clues from the story before, during and after reading. We have also been learning how to play a range of Math related games that support our understanding of Friends of Ten and grouping objects in different ways. In the coming weeks, we will be focusing on character development and narrative and persuasive writing.
In 5-6 Perry we have had a busy start to the year. We have been working on our geography skills particularly around cardinal directions (North, South, East, West).
Our student teacher Miss Young designed an activity where the students created an obstacle course and a minefield. The students worked in pairs and guided each other around the course just using cardinal directions and a number of steps.
We managed to complete the courses successfully without any casualties.
