Over the next few weeks many classes at AFPS will be engaged in off campus excursions as part of learning units linked with our focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Our teachers have engaged with local Aboriginal educators to support this teaching both on site at AFPS and various locations around Hobart.
Inter School Cross Country Carnival
Yesterday I was able to attend part of the Inter School Cross Country Carnival held for the first time at Bayview Secondary College in Rokeby. Our team was made up of Year 3-6 students selected from our own Cross Country Carnival held earlier in Term 2. I witnessed students demonstrating our school values of Aspiration and Courage to complete the difficult course and cheer on their peers. There were some outstanding results achieved with our Year 4 girls receiving a 4th place ribbon in the team’s event.
Krispy Kreme Fundraiser
Recently our School Association team organised a school fundraiser in partnership with Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. We sold over $7000 worth of doughnuts and they are scheduled to arrive next Wednesday 16 June. The doughnuts will be available for collection from 2:30pm onwards behind the admin building outside senior staff offices overlooking the courtyard.
Lee-Anne Hines Retirement
I would like to inform our community of a farewell we will make at the end of this Term. Lee, a valued member of our office team has made the decision to retire from her role in the DoE at Austins Ferry Primary. Lee has been an amazing member of staff since the very beginning of the AFPS journey. Lee previously worked at Claremont Primary School and supported the transition to AFPS on our current site. Lee has supported many families in our community during her career and is loved and admired by our staff. Her quick wit and work ethic are 2 traits we will certainly miss. I would like to wish Lee all the best moving forward as she enjoys her retirement with friends and family.
Reporting Term 2
All Prep – Year 6 students will receive a written progress report at the end of this Term. There will also be an opportunity for all Kinder to Year 6 families to have a parent/teacher interview in the final week of Term 2. We will again have an online booking system that families can log on to and select an interview time that suits their needs.
Story Dog Fundraiser
Last Thursday we held a free dress day and hot dog special in our canteen. These events raised close to $1000 which will be split between the Story Dogs program and our SVT. A big thank you to all students who participated in the free dress day or ordered a hot dog from the canteen. The canteen staff and volunteers were run off their feet with over 350 orders across the school. We would also like to acknowledge Hon Elise Archer MP for her generous donation of $100 towards the worthy cause.
Year 2 Gallen have been learning about money in Numeracy. We have set up a supermarket in the breakout room.
“I like to shop at the supermarket” – Eli
“We learned how blind people learn how to feel the money. They use the shapes” – Sophie
“I like pretending the food is real” – Laicee
We have also been learning about how things change over time. We went on an excursion to the Sustainability Centre to learn about Aboriginal hunting and native animals.
“We went on a walk to find some animal tracks” – Khylan
“I like how we went to see the tadpoles and learn about Tasmanian Devils” – Max J
“I like how we had to put the bugs in their houses” - Allira
In 3 Pearce we have been learning about symmetry.
We had lots of fun exploring our classroom looking for symmetrical objects, and used mirrors to find and make lines of symmetry. We then created these symmetrical creatures using our names.
Can you figure out who created them?
(Hint: turn your head to the left or right and look at the outline)

STUDENT PICK-UP
If you need to collect students throughout the school day for appointments please arrive in time to allow us to locate your child. We do not call to the classroom until you have arrived. This limits interruptions to the class and avoids your child missing out on valuable learning time. Thank you for you co-operation.
UPDATING STUDENT DETAILS
It is vital for the school office to have updated details for all students. In the event of a medical issue or emergency event this information is crucial in the care and response that we provide for your child/children. Please ensure to update information with the office staff as required: emergency contact details, phone numbers, address details and any changes to your childs' medical needs eg. asthma, anaphylaxis.

It would be appreciated if students could please start to return any library books they have borrowed. Office staff will be sending out letters to students who have overdue books ready for the end of Term 2.
When your child attends a Tasmanian Government school you will find that there are costs that you will need to pay. These include levies, school uniforms, excursions and other costs associated with your child’s educational program.
The levy payment contributes to the cost of your child’s education program and includes learning materials, stationery, performances and excursions.
Levy invoices were mailed to parents/carers in early February and there was an expectation that levy payments would be finalised by the end of Term 1 – Wednesday 31 March 2021.
A letter was posted last week to remind parents and carers that 2021 levy payments are now overdue. Admin staff will follow-up with a phone call later this term if you have not made contact with us.
Thank you to those families who have paid, arranged Centrepay payments or who have set up a payment plan.
Payment of levies and charges must be made by:
- Cash or credit card at the school office during office opening hours
- Bpay, Bpoint
- Service Tasmania.
- Qkr!
Parents/carers are encouraged to discuss payment of levies and charges if there is difficulty in affording any element of the levy or charge. A levy instalment plan including Centrepay will be made available to parents/carers who are unable to make a full payment.
Instalment plans offer flexible, sensitively negotiated payment options to assist parents/carers to budget for this cost. Payments can be made weekly, fortnightly, monthly or at other agreed times after payment of an affordable deposit. Please see the School Business Manager, Rhonda Turner, for assistance with this process.
STAS – Student Assistance Scheme
Parents who have a current concession card as listed below can apply for dependent students for assistance under the STAS:
- Services Australia - Centrelink Health Care Card
- Services Australia - Centrelink Low Income Health Care Card
- Services Australia - Pensioner Concession Card or
- Department of Veteran Affairs - Pensioner Concession Card
For 2021 a new on-line form has been developed to assist with processing applications for new applicants and can be completed here: https://stasonlinesubmission.education.tas.gov.au/
We understand this online option may not be possible for all families - hard copy paper forms are available from the school office.

SPSSA Div B Cross Country
On Tuesday the 8th of June the Austins Ferry Cross Country team travelled to Bayview Secondary College for the running of the Division B carnival. This was the first time the site had hosted the carnival so all students were excited to see the new track. Our students displayed fantastic effort and all ran to the best of their ability. Some standout performances from Mia Gilmour, running 3rd in the Grade 4 Girls, Ivy Holden running 6th in the Grade 3 Girls and Eliza Midgley running 5th in the Grade 5 Girls. Our Grade 4 team also finished in 4th place earning a team ribbon. Well done to all our competitors.
