Dear Parent/Guardian
NAPLAN is moving completely online in 2019. This means moving NAPLAN from paper-based assessments to online-based assessments. NAPLAN Online will provide better assessment and more precise results. The assessments feature a tailored test design where the questions a student receives will depend on their answers to previous questions.
Tasmanian schools will participate in NAPLAN Online from 2019.
NAPLAN Online testing will be held from the 14 to 24 May 2019.
NAPLAN Online 2019 will include four components, Writing, Numeracy, Conventions of Language and Reading. For 2019 Year Three students will be completing a paper based Writing Test. Online Testing will be available for each of the NAPLAN year levels (3, 5, 7 and 9)
Schools will receive results and reports for participants following the completion of NAPLAN Online 2019. Individual Student Reports will have the same format as the results from the paper based testing. The same report format is used for every student in Australia.
Individual student performance in NAPLAN is shown on a national achievement scale for each test. The performance of individual students can be compared to the average performance of all students in Australia.
Security and privacy are key requirements for the delivery of national testing. The online assessment platform has been designed to comply with relevant national data security policies and guidelines as well as data encryption standards. It meets the requirements of the Australian Government’s Protective Security Policy Framework and Information Security Manual to protect privacy of data, including any personal student data, required to be used.
Please see the Department of Education’s NAPLAN Online Privacy Notice (https://documentcentre.education.tas.gov.au/Documents/NAPLAN-online-privacy-notice.pdf) for more information.
Thank you, in anticipation, for you and your child’s participation in this important national initiative.
If you have further questions, please contact Jonathon Cook either at school or at jonathon.cook@education.tas.gov.au
The 1/2 Street hosted a Grandparent's Afternoon as a part of their unit on the past. It was a lovely afternoon where students got the opportunity to construct some questions about what school was like when their grandparent's were their age (i.e. did you have computers at school? what were the class sizes like? did you have to walk to school? etc). They also took their visitors for a tour around the school. It was great to see a few visitors bring in photos, scrapbooks and items from the past to discuss with the students.
The Substation in the early years car park (the big green box) will be removed on Wednesday 15 May. Please be aware there will be construction and civil works on that morning.

How many words do you know?
If children don’t know enough words, they can find it hard to learn at school.
Here are some quick ideas to help your child learn new words.
- When you are with your child, talk to them about what you are doing and what you can see.
- Grab a book and talk about everything that is on the page.
- Make up your own stories about the pictures.
- Play with your child and think out loud. Board games are still a great idea!
- When you hear less common words on the TV, take time to explain what they mean.
National Walk and Ride Safely to School Day
On Friday 17 May 2019, Austins Ferry Primary School will participate in Walk and Ride Safely to School Day.
We will be hosting a free community healthy breakfast at Breakfast Club in the Kitchen Garden for all students and their parents/carers who participate by safely walking or riding to school.
Now in its 20th year, National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual event encouraging all Primary School students commute safely to school.
The purpose is to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment:
- Teach safe ways to behave around roads and traffic
- Consider our transport habits
- Incorporate physical activity into our daily routine
- Prevent health related issues e.g. obesity and heart disease.
