It is fantastic to sit down and write the newsletter knowing our school has returned to full attendance. Our first week back was filled with smiles and learning, students were excited to return to the classroom and staff were well prepared. Our structures to support physical distancing at drop off and collection have worked well and we appreciate community support in undertaking these changes!
Term 2 Reporting
Due to COVID-19, and the impact on students, DoE have made the decision to revise our general mid-year reporting process. Between 15 June and 26 June all teachers will be contacting student’s families to arrange a short meeting. This meeting can take place in several forms (phone, in person or video). During these conversations teachers will report to parents on student wellbeing while also outlining progress in Numeracy and Literacy. These conversations will be summarised by teachers and put on student files for future reference and reporting in 2020.
Uniform
We would like to remind students about our uniform policy and encourage parents/carers to speak with children about wearing correct school uniform. We have a range of uniform items to support the winter months including beanies and hoodies. We acknowledge on cold days students will wear jackets or an extra jumper over their uniform, however we still encourage all students to wear general school uniform under these items on cold days.
Assemblies
During Term 2 we have moved to online video assemblies where students remain in their classrooms and link to the assembly via video link. Once these assemblies are completed we will endeavour to share the recordings with our community so they can still feel connected and witness children receiving certificates etc.
Home Reading Program
It is important for families to continue with our home reading program now that all students have returned to school. Students are able to take books home and we are still recording student logs to ensure certificates are being distributed for special milestones. Reading with your child is an important step in their education and can be a great one on one opportunity to spend time with your child.
Fire Safety Program
Our School Fire Safety program will commence on Monday 15 June and run for 2 weeks, including all students across our school. We will have a Fire Education Officer on site working in classrooms educating students on fire safety. This program happens every 2 years so we are excited to welcome them back in 2020.

Congratulations Austins Ferry Primary, we are now officially an eSmart school.
eSmart is an initiative of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation, a national charity committed to protecting children from violence. Cyberbullying, sexual predation, identity theft and accessing and sending inappropriate images and content are some of the real cyber safety risks facing young people today.
An eSmart school is one where the smart, safe and responsible use of information and communications technology is a cultural norm. Students, teachers and the wider school community are equipped to embrace the best these technologies can offer while being savvy about the pitfalls.
In eSmart schools, relationships are strong and supportive, and learning outcomes are enhanced. Bullying and cyberbullying are therefore less likely to thrive.

3/4 RQ are enjoying being back at school and we have been relearning classroom routines and expectations.
We have been working on some tasks about friendship and we discussed the question 'What makes a good friend?' After this discussion we created our own friendship advertisements. We hope you like them.
We read the book Elmer by David McKee and decided to create our own Elmers.
Since returning to school, 3/4 McArthur have revisited our class goals and routines, and paid close attention to being aware of how we are feeling and looking out for each other.
Last week we participated in the simultaneous reading of Chicken Divas by Jimmy and Nate from Hit 100.9. The story is about two chickens who spend the day snoozing and napping, but under the cover of night they get all glammed up and head to the theatre to perform in front of adorning crowds. As a follow up activity the students designed costumes for their alter egos describing what they did after dark.
We’ve also been busy learning about the difference between parallel and perpendicular lines, and how angles are formed. The students created these Starbursts and have been busy identifying acute, obtuse and right angles within their artwork. Students are also familiarising themselves with protractors and measuring the angles contained in the Starbursts.
This week we have commenced our Aboriginal unit and we’re focusing on how we share knowledge between our generations.
