With only 2.5 weeks of Term 4 to go in 2019 we are reaching an exciting and busy time at AFPS where we celebrate the amazing achievements of our school community. These celebrations kicked off earlier this week with our Kinder – Year 2 awards assembly. It was fantastic to see so many families attend and acknowledge the work completed in 2019. Students and teachers presented their work in person and through video which was very enjoyable to watch.
Tuesday this week also saw the end of our 'Movember' event where several teachers grew moustaches to raise awareness for men’s health. As a school we raised over $700 through a free clothes day and shave off. 4/5 Ley raised the most amount of money so selected students from that class turned into barbers and shaved off the moustaches!
End of Year Reporting – End of year reports will be sent home with students on Monday 16 December for Prep to Year 6. Kinder students will receive Celebration of Learning folders on Tuesday 17 December. We welcome parent/guardians to contact class teachers via our various modes of communication if they would like to discuss the reports further.
2020 class placement letters will be sent home to all students on Wednesday 18 December containing the name of class teacher. Students will then visit their new class and meet 2020 class teacher at 10.15am the following day. This will give students a chance to interact with 2020 classmates and visit their new POD or learning area.
This time of year also sees our school farewell departing staff and introduce new staff for the following year. In 2019 we are farewelling the following teachers who are moving on for various reasons. Ange Casey, Felicity Toogood and Elise Clifford are all transferring to new schools which are closer to their homes which allows them more time with family. James Lilas our School Psychologist is retiring after many years of professional service for a range of schools. I would like to thank these staff members for their outstanding contributions to our school.
New staff commencing in 2020:
Anita Clifton – Kinder
Wendy Flood – Launching into Learning
Damon Nichols – 3/4
Patrick Curley – Music
I would also like to take this opportunity to remind our community to check the upcoming events that are occurring during the final 2 weeks.

5/6 Gatenby have explored geometry and measurement during numeracy lessons this term. We have conducted several investigations that relied on our knowledge of factors and identification of patterns. In doing so, we also developed our understanding of area, angles as well as algebra.
We have learnt about the nets of 3D shapes and their features such as faces, edges and vertices.
We got creative by constructing small and large sized tetrahedrons, icosahedrons and dodecahedrons!
The 5/6 classes recently held our Asia Expo LIFT event. Parents and family members were invited to visit and celebrate all the amazing research students has completed into their chosen Asian country.
Each group created a physical display that also included a digital component. It was a fantastic afternoon with lots of creativity and collaboration skills on display.
Last week our Kindergarten students had the opportunity to experience the culture of Asia.
We were lucky enough to have our families with Asian heritage come and share their customs, culture, food and even some traditonal dress.

Dear Parent / Carer
In 2020 our school has transferred from the Skoolbag app to the SZapp.
SZapp has similar features to Skoolbag: you can view our newsletter and school calendar, send an absentee notification and visit our school website.
Parents/Carers,
When leaving a message for your child/ren for the end of the day, please ensure you call the office before 2:25pm as the class notice bags are collected at 2:30pm. Passing on messages after 2:30pm becomes quite difficult and we cannot guarantee messages will be received effectively after this time.
Also, a reminder that in Term 4, our Hat Policy will be in full swing. If your child/ren are not wearing a hat when outside, they will be asked to play in the shade area. Slouch and Bucket hats are available for purchase at the school office or through Qkr! for $12 each.
Thank you.
Under departmental policy, it is important to notify the school office when your child/ren are absent from school.
We have a few quick and easy ways for you to do this.
Call the school office - 6275 7222
Leave a message on the Absence Message Bank - 6275 7272
or send a short e-mail to austins.ferry.primary@education.tas.gov.au
It is vital for the school office to have updated details for all students. In the event of a medical issue or emergency event this information is crucial in the care and response that we provide for your child/children. Please ensure to update information with the office staff as required: emergency contact details, phone numbers, address details and any changes to your childs' medical needs eg. asthma, anaphylaxis.
