Planning for next year is progressing well. Class structures for 2024 will be as follows:
- Kindergarten (x3). They will all operate on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
- Prep x 1
- Prep 1 x 2
- Year 1 / 2 x 4
- Year 3 / 4 x 5
- Year 5 x 3
- Year 6 x 3
Enrolment numbers for next year are quite good and we continue to have new enrolments weekly. Our Year 6 cohort is quite large this year so we farewell quite a large number in this space this year. We will be having 21 classes which we are excited about due to the smaller class numbers in each class.
At this stage we are still working on creating the class lists. This is done with consultation amongst all staff members, with the focus on academic, social and emotional needs of the students. Our staff know the students extremely well and spend a lot of time and thought on what will support each student best. Thank you to all our staff for contributing to these class lists.
To continue supporting all students we are anticipating additional teacher support across the school. The system focus of the Department is Reading for 2024, which will form a large part of our teaching and learning inquiries for next year. DECYP are working hard to provide the resources and professional learning to maximise student outcomes for all students across the state. In order to support this priority, I would like to thank the School Association for their financial support in providing some decodable readers for identified students.
This term a report will go home to students that demonstrates achievement in English, Maths and Science. From Years 1 – 6 this will also include HASS. There are no written comments on this report, students are assessed against the 9 point scale which shows if where they are against the standards for their year group. Reports will go home on 15 December, including a sample of work from either Music, PE, Japanese, Art or STEM.
We are anticipating that students will get a chance to meet their new teacher on Tuesday 19 December. This is a lovely opportunity for students to engage with the students who will be in their class in 2024 and to see their new classroom. It is an exciting time, but can also be a little daunting as new challenges present themselves when there is change. It is a great opportunity to talk to students about how change can also be really positive and helps us learn and grow.
I would like to thank the Year 5 and 6 students who demonstrated our school values on their excursion on Tuesday. It has been reported that they were respectful, thoughtful and kind. They listened well to each other, engaged in the learning opportunity and by all accounts, had a wonderful time. I would like to celebrate this with the community as it reminds us that we have a wonderful school and we should be proud of our students and their achievements. As always, if you have something that you would like to celebrate about your child, please do not hesitate to contact us so we can all share in the joy together.
I had a couple of Year 6 students in my office today – they wanted to share some news with me, but it was lovely to see the way in which they spent a short period of time writing on my whiteboard, the aspects of school that they feel are working well. They wrote all about respect and what it sounds and looks like and talked about how growth is important in learning. I am so proud of the work that our teachers and families do to encourage this positivity. It is wonderful to see.
The most wonderful time of the year is coming up – a community celebration that will share the talents of our students. This is indeed the Christmas Carols. I hope that as many families as possible are able to come along and share in the festivities on 14 December.
As always, the end of year brings many Year 6 events. Information will continue to be distributed with regard to the assembly, leavers dinner and all things Year 6!!
As always, please do not hesitate to come and see me if you have any questions, concerns or just want to drop in and say hi.

Prep Lincolne have been practicing writing sentences and using a checklist to make sure we use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces correctly. We have written sentences about a bear using some words we know, some words we can find and we have used our letter sound knowledge to have a go when we do not know.
This term in 3/4 Cochrane we were fortunate enough to have a member of the RSPCA come to talk to us about how to take care of our pets and wildlife. This session was very interesting and informative.
In Literacy, we have completed our poetry unit where we wrote many different types of poems using a range of poetic devices.
In Numeracy, we are learning about money. Students are engaged with this unit as we have created a class shop with pretend money. Students are working with money to add monetary values together and give change.
We have been incredibly busy in our class.
In literacy, we have been expanding our vocabulary and created ‘cinnamon rolls’ to encourage us to use more interesting words when writing. We have also been practicing writing procedural texts and created a visual diagram to support our procedural texts.
We have also been spending time with our buddies, Prep Lincolne. We have been enjoying the sunshine, reading with each other. We also got to help our buddies by measuring how tall they are.
Lastly, we recently went on our excursion to the Waterworks Reserve. It was amazing to see the historic stonework and the old aqueducts on the walk.
