As Term 3 comes to a close I’d like to thank staff for the ongoing care and support that they provide to students. Each day I witness staff members going above and beyond to ensure that our students feel connected, safe and cared for at Austins Ferry Primary School. Education is not a profession that people enter with personal gain in mind. It is a passion to support children to grow and flourish that drives each of us and the ongoing work that we do. With this in mind, I’d like to encourage parents and carers to continue to support their children by staying connected with us and working in partnership to ensure the best possible outcomes for students.
Looking back on Term 3, it has been filled with fantastic learning opportunities and experiences for our students. Just over the past few weeks, students have undertaken many experiences to engage with the wider community, including:
- Mr Gatenby supporting students to take part in the primary school chess competition at St. Virgils College. The team put in a wonderful performance to finish 2nd overall in the primary school category.
- Mr Lewinski supporting multiple groups of students to take part in the Variety Inclusion Sports Day and MONA farm excursions.
- Mr Bailey and Mr Coppleman organising external providers to come in and lead both cricket and golf programs for students across Years Prep-6.
- Numerous year groups including LiL, Kinder, Prep and 1/2 classes heading out and about on school excursions to locations including the Sandy Bay playground, the Museum, Poimena and the Sorell Farm.
- Sensei Wickens supporting students to take part in the Japanese speech competition.
- Students in Years 3-6 attempting to gain selection in the Interschool swimming team at the school swim trials and representing their houses in the recent swimming carnival.
- Kinder students participating in Bush Kinder sessions.
- Year 5 and 6 students finishing off another successful season of the Winter Sports roster.
This is only a snapshot of some of the experiences that students have engaged with in the last few weeks. There have been many more across Term 3 and preceding terms. Thank you to all the staff for continuing to support students to take part in these wonderful opportunities.
Tomorrow we are looking forward to celebrating the end of a successful term with our Footy Colours Day Breakfast and Staff versus Students football match. I encourage all families to wear their favourite teams’ colours and come along from 8am for a complimentary cooked breakfast. There will be activities on hand and appearances from local football stars Jordan West and Daniel Coppleman. Please come along to help celebrate while raising money for the Fight Cancer Foundation.
As we look forward to Term 4, I would like to thank and farewell departing members of staff and welcome back and introduce those joining or re-joining us.
Farewell and thankyou to Mandy Jane Quinn who has stepped into the Assistant Principal role for the past 8 weeks while Rachel Sayers has been on leave. It has been wonderful having you as part of our staff. The expertise that you have brought into the school has been invaluable. We wish you all the best for the remainder of the school year at Lindisfarne North Primary School.
We welcome back Rachel Sayers who returns after taking leave to travel around Northern Europe. We can’t wait to see you and hear of the wonderful adventures that you have had on your trip.
We also welcome Kate Mills who will be starting in the role of Kitchen Specialist, taking over from the previously departed Jess Muir. We’d like to thank Jess for all the wonderful work that she has done with students over the years and look forward to Kate continuing this in Term 4 and beyond.
Finally, I’d like to thank the community for their support over the last couple of weeks as I have stepped into the Principal position while Suzanne has been away. It has been a rewarding and enjoyable experience and I am thankful for the support of those around me throughout this time.
I’d like to wish all our school community a safe term break. Hopefully filled with lots of warm weather and opportunities to relax, ready for a productive Term 4.

This term in 3/4 Gollogly, we have been learning lots about Antarctica in our Submerged inquiry. We dived straight into the inquiry with a visit from the Antarctic Division, which was informative, fun, and intriguing. Each week we learnt about a different Antarctic animal, as well as a new word linked with Antarctica. While learning about the different species, we practised taking notes which helped while writing an information report on our chosen Antarctic animal. During a science experiment, we discovered how penguins adapt to the freezing, cold climate in Antarctica. We tested how their special oil gland (uropygial gland) keeps them warm and dry by pouring oil into blue-coloured water. While recording our results, we noticed the oil repelled the water and rose to the top.
Kuka Pod hired an ice box from TMAG, which provided us with an opportunity to see and feel examples of clothing worn in Antarctica. We also analysed a taxidermied emperor penguin chick, whales’ teeth and baleen, krill, and geological samples. This inspired creative storytelling while writing a journal entry as though we were accompanying Sir Douglas Mawson on his Antarctic expedition.
The Parents and Kids Together (PaKT) activity program runs on Tuesdays throughout the school year. It is a program for parents and carers who want to spend some quality time with their children making things out of recycles materials and engaging with the school community. Each session also includes games and snacks.
Here are some photos from the tree house project created during Term 3.
