Welcome to another week of exciting opportunities and learning. Today that was all about dressing up as a favourite book character. Getting into the spirit of dressing up can be challenging for some students – and staff as we put ourselves outside our comfort zone. It was so great to see so many people involved in celebrating the joy of books. Books are wonderful as they introduce us to a world of imagination, they help improve vocabulary, reading and writing skills and provide knowledge of unknown things.
Our “Communicating Learning Progress to Families” is coming up again in week 6. For many families this will mean a sample of work will come home that indicates learning and a future focus. Last term the Evidence of Learning was in the area of Literacy and this term it will be Mathematics. This is an opportunity for you to share and discuss learning at home. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child(ren), please make the first point of contact the class teacher. Making a time for after school is advisable as their mornings can be quite busy with the students. Contact can be made via Class Dojo, phone or in person. If it is more than a quick check in, please make a time to see them.
Our next School Association Meeting is on Tuesday 22 August. This is a great opportunity to come along and hear about what is happening in the school, and to support our school community. We would love to see you there. We will be meeting in the conference room at 6pm.
At times, it is important to remind ourselves about some of our procedures regarding the safety of our students. For example, our school hours are from 8:30am through to 2:50pm. It is important that parents do not bring children to school before school hours because there is no supervision of students at that time. Similarly, it is important parents either collect their children at the end of the school day or arrange for them to catch the bus home/make other collection arrangements so that students are not left unsupervised at the end of the school day. Unsupervised students may engage in dangerous play or put themselves in dangerous locations such as car parks being used by buses and cars during school drop off/pick up. Parents are responsible for their child outside school hours unless they have accessed school-based child-care during these times. If your child is accessing ‘Breakfast Club’ before school, please be aware that this is not open until 8am. Students should not be left at school before this time as there is no supervision before 8am.
As parents/carers, you play an important role in protecting your child from harm. “Think You Know” is an organisation that helps educate teachers, parents, and carers who have legal, social and ethical considerations on the use of technology and how to prevent incidents occurring. They also talk about how to prevent harm, identify safe and unsafe situations and knowing when and how to seek help. On Tuesday 12 September we have an open invitation for parents to attend a session – “Think You Know” at school from 3:30pm. If you would like to attend, please advise your class teacher of your interest through Class Dojo. Further information will be shared in a timely manner regarding the venue. Students in Years 4–6 will have a session that is aimed at their age and year level on 19 September. Please do not hesitate to see me if you have any questions regarding this.
A reminder that Swim and Water Safety begins on Monday 21 August for students in Years 3–5 and select Year 6 students. It is a great programme that supports water confidence, stroke development and being safe around water.

Today we began our celebrations of Book Week with a parade of the many and varied costumes our students dressed up in. They were colourful and innovative and students thoroughly enjoyed participating. Many thanks for the efforts made at home to dress up your child. Book week celebrations will continue over the next two weeks with a variety of events planned.
The children in Prep/1 Duncan have been working hard on creating book covers. We thought about the different parts of books and have included these in our designs. We thought about our favourite book types and interests and came up with lots of different titles. Some children illustrated their book covers in pencil, others used paint.
We hope you enjoy our creative book covers and would choose one of our books to read.
Prep F have been reading ‘Bev and Kev’ which is a shortlisted book for The Children's Book of the Year Awards. We have also read another story, called 'Elephant and the Dog' which was written by local Tasmanian author, Steve Isham, and illustrated by his daughter, Shiloh Longbottom. We then compared the two stories and found some similarities. Prep F have enjoyed finding rhyming words in the stories and creating African savannah paintings.
In 3/4 Cochrane, we were fortunate enough to have an incursion where two people from Mawson’s Hut Foundation came to our school to teach us about Antarctica. This incursion allowed students to further their knowledge into our inquiry topic for Term 3 which is Antarctica. At the incursion students enjoyed sitting in the tent and having fake snow blown on them. They also enjoyed waddling around like penguins with an egg on their feet.
In 5/6 Kearns, we have begun our unit on fractions. We have been exploring different ways to show, read and compare fractions. Students have been able to achieve this by using drawings and hands-on tasks, like using strips of paper to show a fraction.
We have also been focusing on our reading, identifying areas we want to improve on and creating goals to help us grow our reading abilities and skills. Students have been enthusiastic in making their goals and we are excited to reach these.
Moonah Arts Centre Beginning 1 November 2023
Dear Local School Community,
Moonah Arts Centre is hosting a fantastic series of theatre workshops for kids aged 6-14, beginning November 1 2023.
Ignite your child’s imagination and unleash their inner performer with Act Wild Theatre’s transformative ‘Character Creation’ workshop run by performing artist and theatre practitioner, Jem Nichols.
This engaging 6-week program invites budding performers, aged 6 to 14 years, to explore improvisation, theatre sports, physical theatre and the art of character creation. Through dynamic exercises and theatre games, we nurture their creativity, build confidence and foster teamwork. Each week, they’ll embody different characters, from ‘mighty heroes’ to ‘cheeky jesters’ to ‘cunning villains,’ while re-claiming their voice, embracing creative thinking and collaborating with others. Join us for an extraordinary experience that will energise and inspire, empowering them to shine not only in school but throughout their lives.
Jem Nichols graduated from Monash University with a BA in Performing Arts, is an acting coach and a certified Alexander Technique practitioner with a special interest in physical theatre and improvisation.
